Here are some Chardin paintings in a full gallery with 30 of his most famous works. Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin is a famous French still life artist from the 18th century. Chardin paintings are considered to be among the best still life works of all time, although he also completed many portrait oil paintings as well. The legacy of Chardin is shown in the amount of artists who were inspired by his works.
Chardin’s painting style differed greatily from the Rococo painting that was common in French art of the 18th century. Chardin would choose different topics for inclusion in his works. He preferred simple textured still lifes and personal portraits. Still Life with a Smoker’s Box and Boy with a Top are examples of how he achieved charm and success together.
Chardin was almost entirely self-taught but was inspired in the main realism artists and masters of the previous 17th century, which served as his education rather than conventional training. Louis XV was an early follower of his style and career, and Chardin did manage to achieve fame within his own lifetimes, unlike many other artists.
