El Greco’s paintings are believed to have help seed new art movements such as Expressionism and Cubism. Greek artist El Greco spent a lot of time in Italy where he added influences to his existing techniques with elements of Mannerism and of the Venetian Renaissance.
El Greco’s dramatic, expressionistic and highly original style was not respected or understood by his contemporaries until around the 20th century when art styles and movements became more liberal and open minded, with original ideas and thinking encouraged.
