Juan Gris is a Spanish painter and sculptor who created most of his paintings in France, where he spent the majority of his life. Gris paintings came around the early 20th century and he was an important part of the rise of Cubism, producing many of it’s most famous paintings alongside it’s figurehead Pablo Picasso.

Juan Gris progressed during his relatively short career from Cubism to Synthetic Cubism. Picasso and Braque were famous for their monochromatic Cubist works but Gris preferred to use brighter harmonious colors in his paintings which portrayed a braver, more original artist possibly influenced by the works of close friend Henri Matisse, who was well known for this.
