Morisot was one of the most important female artists of that era, due to her connections to such a crucial and popular art movement which developed from Paris, France to the rest of the world.Morisot’s career was to take her into close proximity with many other great names from the impressionist era, both through her paintings and in the path of her life as they became intertwined. She was to marry the brother of fellow artist Edouard Manet, Eugene. In fact, it was her advice which led to Manet experimenting with the plein air technique of painting, which produced many of his best known works.

Berthe Morisot was a painter from an early age, as was her sister, Edma Morisot. They came from an established French family in the town of Bourges. Crucially, at a time when women were finding their way in society, Berthe’s family were happy to provide support to her desire of becoming an established artist and progressing her skills as far as possible.
